Dear Winterhaven Families:

Please read the following to learn about our Registration Night, school supplies, school donation for supplies, the change of start time for our students in grades 6-8, and other start of the school information.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our main office - 503-916-6200.

In case you did not hear, Patty Jensen, who had been our Principal's Secretary for many years, has retired.  Our new principal's secretary, Nancy Cooper, comes to us from Hayhurst School, where she served as their school secretary.  Please join me in welcoming Nancy to Winterhaven!

I hope everyone has had a safe, restful and enjoyable summer vacation!  I want to take a moment to give you some information about the upcoming events that will help kick off the 2016-17 school year.  If you have questions, please do not hesitate to give our office a call.

  1. Opening-of-school-packets will be available for pickup beginning Friday, August 19th, from 9 am to 3:30 pm.  We would appreciate families picking them up prior to the Winterhaven Registration Night that is Wednesday, August 24th, from 4 pm to 6 pm.  By picking them up early, you can fill out all of the forms and return everything when you come to Registration Night.  If you are unable to pick up your packet prior to this time, you can get the packets at Registration and fill everything out, leaving the information with us that same evening.  It is imperative that we have all of your information before the first day, so we are prepared for any circumstance that might arise.  Packets not picked up will not be mailed to families.  They will be sent home with your child on the first day of school.
  2. The Winterhaven Registration Night will be on Wednesday, August 24th from 4 pm to 6 pm.  Teachers will be present and it is a time for families to meet other Winterhaven families.  It is also an opportunity to sign up for carpooling and for afterschool clubs.  These signups will take place in the gym.  It is also when middle school students can pick up their schedules and receive their locker assignments.  Kindergartners will have assessments prior to their first day of school and parents will be able to sign up for an assessment time during Registration Night.
  3. Our school wants all students in each class to have the same number and type of supplies. We do ask for a $30 school donation per child to pay for supplies at the beginning of the year.  This is to cover the cost of pencils, glue, markers, paper and other supplies we provide for the classrooms.  Families can pay the $30 materials donation, which helps purchase classroom and school supplies during registration.  This donation replaces the school supply list so that students and teachers have common materials and supplies to use in their classrooms.  Checks can be made out to Winterhaven School.
  4. At the Registration night, I will be holding a short meeting in the auditorium for families who are new to Winterhaven School.  The meeting will start at 5:00 pm.  This meeting will give me an opportunity to give some information to the new families as they transition to Winterhaven School. Please plan to attend if your family will be new to Winterhaven this year.
  5. The school office is now open from 9 am to 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday.  The teachers return on August 23rd.  The first day of school for grades 1-8 is Monday, August 29th.  The first day of school for kindergartners will be Thursday, September 1st.  The school day for students in grades 6-8 has changed this year and school now begins at 8:30 am.  For students in grades K-5, school still starts at 8:45 am.  The school day ends at 3:00 pm.  It is very important that students arrive to their classes on time so as not to miss out on important instructional time.
  6. The inside of our building has been cleaned and is awaiting the return of staff and students.  Our grounds however, could use some work.  Our Community Care Day will be on the morning of Saturday, August 27th, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.  We hope you can come and help with a facelift of our grounds.  Bring your tools (especially power tools, such as trimmers and pruners) and gardening gloves to assist you with your choice of activity.
  7. Classroom assignments for 2016-17 and suggested supplies are listed below.  Please enjoy the remainder of your summer.  We hope you can make it on August 24th for our Winterhaven Registration Night and on August 27th for the school clean-up.
Thank you,

Mr. Sandilands, Principal
