Scholarship program expansion; starting with Kids-Like-Languages

In partnership with Kids Like Languages, the PTSA is excited to be offering 75% off language classes for all kids on free/reduced lunch for those who have requested it.  Please reply to me directly for more information on this opportunity,  Here's how it works:

  • The family pays for their share of the fee. (In the case of the Kids Like Languages classes it is 25% of the fee which is $36).
  • Once the family pays the fee to the PTSA, the PTSA will pay the remainder of the tuition due to the vendor on behalf of the student’s family. This exchange is confidential beyond the Principal, the PTSA scholarship coordinator, and the PTSA treasurer.

We want all our students to be able to share in the extracurricular opportunities that Winterhaven offers, as much as is possible.  We expect this to be the beginning of a program:  We are in search of a volunteer to distribute scholarships and further develop the program into next year.  This will expand scholarships for student families who need extra financial support in order to participate.  Please reply for more information.

Until we find the coordinator, please bring scholarship requests to Winterhaven Principal Mark Sandilands and we’ll work to make those happen.  Between now and the end of the 2017 school year, qualified students are eligible for up to two scholarship opportunities.

Additional Background: With the recent announcement of the afterschool language classes for grades K-5, there have been a number of requests for scholarship support. While The PTSA has maintained a small budget in the past for field trips and extra curricular scholarships, we agree there is need for something more programmatic. Since we are a smaller focus school it is not possible to offer the same level of support as larger schools, who have paid staff members to manage their after school programs. Nonetheless, we are rearranging our PTSA budget to achieve this as best we can.  We are also grateful to “Kids-Like-Languages” for offering the PTSA a discount on the scholarships. So if you are on the fence about joining your kiddo in the class, please do! We want to support their business also.
