The Winterhaven Way and W.A.N.D.s – Have you heard about W.A.N.D.s yet? A few weeks back, our School Climate committee made the decision to pilot a positive recognition program to reward students who follow our school’s expectations, also known as the Winterhaven Way. When students follow the Winterhaven Way by being Safe, Respectful, and Responsible, our staff recognizes them by awarding them a W.A.N.D. (Wonderful, Awesome, Nice, and Delightful). We set a goal of 500 W.A.N.D.s and our students met that goal very quickly, earning them a little extra time during lunch recess. We have since increased our goal and we’ll see how quickly our students can reach this new number. As we continue to pilot this program, we will be having other incentives for the students to earn as they follow the Winterhaven Way. At the end of the school year, the School Climate team, along with the rest of the Winterhaven staff, will evaluate the program to determine next steps moving into next year.
PPS School Calendar Updates – The PPS board approved on Tuesday the addition of 2 school days due to the inclement weather we had back in January. The 2 days added are Friday, April 7th and Thursday, June 15th. The April 7th date was previously a teacher planning day without students. It will now be a regular school day. In addition, due to this change, there will not be a report card coming at the end of quarter 3. There will be a middle school progress report for those students who might be in danger of failing a class. At the elementary level, there will not be a progress report or report card. The final report card will come at the end of quarter 4 (the end of the school year). The last day of school is now Thursday, June 15th. This means that the 8th grade promotion will be moved once again, with it now being on Wednesday, June 14th from 6 pm to 7 pm. Our Winterhaven School Picnic will also be on Wednesday, June 14th.
Immigrant and Refugee Donation Drive - March 3 to March 23 - As you may know, every quarter of the school year we have parent and teacher run interest classes that meet once a week on Fridays. This quarter, as part of our Community Awareness elective run by Winterhaven parents, we are organizing a donation drive. This drive is collecting donations for the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization (IRCO) who serves the holistic needs of immigrants, refugees, and mainstream community members. We as students believe that it is crucial for our community to help and provide support for immigrant and refugee families. We believe that everyone has the right and obligation to take part in their community and its actions, including kids. As 6, 7, and 8 graders, we are trying to take action and help families who may not be as lucky and well off as we are. So, if you have the time and ability to donate these necessities to families in need we ask you to do so and join us in our search for equality. If you have any questions, please email our teachers and fellow Winterhaven parents Kristin Doherty or Beth Nelson at email@example.com and firstname.lastname@example.org
Please leave donations in the front entry way of the school
Donations we recommend may include:
All donations will go to IRCO, (Immigrant & Refugee Community Organization) https://www.irco.org/who-we-are/
