Counselor’s Corner Hi everyone, Here’s a small piece of what’s going on in Winterhaven counseling this week.

The middle school students watched the documentary “Screenagers” on Wednesday. Having a discussion with them about screens at home would be timely and likely better received than other times.

It’s Dr. Seuss’ Birthday this week so in the K-5 classes, we are gearing towards that.   I’ll be reading “Yertle the Turtle” and “The Big Brag” to them sometime during the week.  (There’s a lot going on here so my usual schedule is a little off.)  We will be linking these stories into ways of communicating with each other and problem solving, which will be our focus for the next three weeks until Spring Break.

6th grade will be finishing up our look at race and racism and begin our suicide awareness unit.  We will transition to Sex Ed and healthy relationships the week before Spring Break.

Cleveland’s visit to our 8th graders got snowed out last week.  We are on for the 8th.  I hope.  Fingers crossed.  This is the same day that they are visiting Sellwood, so our students are not behind in any way.

Our question:  How does race (or our perception of it) influence our communication with each other?  Do we expect more or less from different races in our discussions with them?  Why?  Does this fit with our sense of equity and justice?

Last Day of School this school year – The last day of school for the 2017-18 school year is Friday, June 8th.  This is different than what is in the Winterhaven Parent/Student Handbook.  This does mean that the 8th grade promotion will be on Thursday, June 7th at 6 pm.  It also means that the School Picnic will be on Thursday, June 7th.  We do not believe a day will be added for the day of school missed on February 21st due to inclement weather, but if we miss additional days this year due to the weather, it is possible that PPS could make up those days.

Lost and Found – The lost and found cart is overflowing!  We will be clearing it on Monday, March 12.  Please check the cart to see if any of your student’s items might be on it.

Winterhaven Geographic Bee - Congratulations to 8th grader, Owen Jablonski! He has won the 2018 Winterhaven Geographic Bee. Students in fourth through eighth grade were eligible to participate in the preliminary rounds. The other finalists were Howie Hay, Jefferson Furlong, Eldon Nichols, Diego Hernandez, Mason Bruner, Sterling Wolk, and Peter Naumoff.

Thank you to Ms. Schumann for hosting this year. Based upon the results of a written assesssment from National Geographic, Owen could qualify for the Oregon Geographic Bee, which will take place this April. Please contact Ms. Tran ( if you have any questions.

Winterhaven Spelling Bee - Congratulations to 6th grader, Agatha Chang! She has won the 2018 Winterhaven Spelling Bee. Agatha will represent Winterhaven in the Portland Tribune/Comcast Regional Spelling Bee in March.  Almost every class participated in the preliminary rounds this year. The other finalists were Ber Ewing, Sabina Cavowitz, Hazel Mackey, General Sutton, Lazarus Bambakidis, Mathieu Dupeyroux, Nina Gomez, Stephen Fisher, and Elliot Stone. Please contact Ms. Tran ( if you have any questions.

Variety Show –Our amazing Variety show gives Winterhaven students a way to showcase creative and interesting things that they enjoy doing. As always, we are looking for a VARIETY of acts to be in the show:  music, dance, comedy, skits, athletics, speech, novelty, magic...just to name a few.
