Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week! We sure do appreciate all our teachers and staff do for us and our students. The following are ideas for things that Winterhaven Families can do each day to show our gratitude:

  • Monday – Thank you Day - Bring a homemade thank you cards for teachers and staff. Also, start bringing Starbucks gift cards/donations into the office (see Wednesday)
  • Tuesday – Picture Day: Students can draw/create a picture for teachers and staff. Also, take a moment to get a picture taken with teachers and staff. Then you can email or print the picture for them later
  • Wednesday – Coffee Day- Monday & Tuesday, you can bring in Starbucks gift cards or donations into the office. We will distribute the cards among the staff on Wednesday and that morning the PTSA will provide some coffee for the teachers to have in the lounge. If you want to bring a gift card, smaller denominations are best ($5-$10) and please label the card with the amount. To be honest, it's easier for us to use donations and then split the total amount evenly.
  • Thursday - Random Acts of Kindness – go out of your way to do something nice for your teachers & staff. Help them clean up a project, offer to pass out some papers, tell them something you appreciate about them, be more attentive in class...there's so many possibilities.
  • Friday – It's Cinco de Mayo! Bring paper or real flowers from your garden to make a fun bouquet for teachers and staff. Click here for instructions on how to make paper flowers.

We would also love help with providing the staff with desserts, snacks or side dish during the week Sign up online:

Feel free to contact Kari at with any questions.

Spring Elementary Music Concerts - Please mark your calendars for our Spring Elementary Music Concerts. Our students are working hard and looking forward to a presentation of songs from a variety of countries.

  • GRADE K, 1 and 2 - Wednesday May 10th 6:30 pm in the Auditorium
  • GRADE 3, 4, and 5 Wednesday May 24th 6:30 pm in the Auditorium

Winterhaven Carnival – The 7th Annual Winterhaven Carnival is coming up soon! Save the date for Friday May 19th from 5 pm - 8 pm right here at Winterhaven. For those that are new to the school, this is our biggest community event of the year and it coincides with our Wealth of Winterhaven School Auction and the Annual Art Show. It is a good time for the whole family that is (mostly) free! For no cost we will have a bouncy house for all ages, an inflatable slide for kids up to 4th grade and an inflatable obstacle course for kids in grades 5 and up. Also for free are various carnival games, performances by a juggling clown on a unicycle, balloon animals, face painting, popcorn and snow cones. In addition for a small fee there is a “dunk” tank for teachers (this is a fundraiser run by the 5th grade class to benefit the school garden), a cupcake walk, and pizza, salad and soda for sale. Also the Annual Art Show will be going on in the gym organized by our own amazing art teacher Sharon Hatrack. Make sure you go in and check out all the cool and creative work our kids have been doing this year! Please put the date on your calendars! Wealth of Winterhaven School Auction – Friday May 19, 2017 during the School Carnival. Do you have a good or service you would be willing to donate? Do you work for a company that would be willing to donate something? Have a friend who owns a business?  Vacation home you'd be willing to offer? A party for a group in your house/vacation house/boat? Products or a gift certificate from your (or a neighborhood) business? (note: most businesses in Sellwood/Westmoreland have been approached)  We’re hoping to have items gathered by May 14th.   Please turn in your donation form (with the donation, if it is an item) at the office as soon as possible. Thank you!!Questions?  Contact Heather Dickinson at

Lunch Account Reminder - The end of the year is coming up and it’s time to pay off lunch account balances. This is especially important for 8th graders, since they will not receive lunch with any negative balance whatsoever when they enter high school. Other grades also have high negative balances and will be given an emergency meal of fruit, vegetables and milk if their balance is over $14.25.  For more information, call Amanda at 916-6200 x73657

Principal Notes – A huge shout out to our 8th graders and the 8th grade Rock Opera!  What a great show!  A lot of time and effort went into the production and I want to thank Emily Ferguson, Melissa Miller, Sharon Hatrack and the multitude of parent volunteers who helped make this happen.  Great job 8th graders!

I also want to thank all our volunteers with helping out on the MAC Attack.  Ms. Dixon ordered up another nice day and wouldn’t you know it, it didn’t rain during the runs.  Great job to our students as well and thanks again to Ms. Dixon for making sure everything ran smoothly.

On another note, during the MAC attack, one of our parent’s cars got broken into out in front of the school.  Please remember to either take valuables with you or remove them from plain sight whenever you might be volunteering here at school.

Lastly, a big thank you to our custodians, Larry Ware and Eugene Houghton.  They work tirelessly to keep our building safe, clean and welcoming.  We really appreciate all they do for Winterhaven!

Thanks, Mr. Mark Sandilands, principal
