Staffing update – I have received my staffing information from PPS and this year, we are fairly stable with our staffing numbers.  Due to higher costs for PERS, among other items, the state’s budget for schools is lower than what is needed to continue the same funding we received this past year.  With the lower budget, our school will be reducing our school secretary position from full time to half time.  At this time, it is the only cut we will have to make for next year.  Ms. D’Ambrosi, who has served as our school secretary this year, will actually be leaving us at the end of this school year to start taking classes at Concordia University to pursue a teaching degree.  Best wishes to Ms. D’Ambrosi!

PPS School Calendar Updates – The PPS board approved on Tuesday the addition of 2 school days due to the inclement weather we had back in January.  The 2 days added are Friday, April 7th and Thursday, June 15th.  The April 7th date was previously a teacher planning day without students.  It will now be a regular school day.  In addition, due to this change, there will not be a report card coming at the end of quarter 3.  There will be a middle school progress report for those students who might be in danger of failing a class.  At the elementary level, there will not be a progress report or report card.  The final report card will come at the end of quarter 4 (the end of the school year).  The last day of school is now Thursday, June 15th.  This means that the 8th grade promotion will be moved once again, with it now being on Wednesday, June 14th from 6 pm to 7 pm.  Our Winterhaven School Picnic will also be on Wednesday, June 14th.

Garden Work Parties - Join us for fun during two garden work parties this month!  On March 17th and 24th, from 3 pm to 5 pm, we will be celebrating the coming of spring in the gardens.  After school, we'll prune plants, spread mulch, share stories, and take care of our natural areas!  All ages and levels of experience needed.  Bring tools, wheel barrels, and friends!  For more information contact Fawn Lengvenis at flengvenis@gmail.com

Immigrant and Refugee Donation Drive - March 3 to March 23 - As you may know, every quarter of the school year we have parent and teacher run interest classes that meet once a week on Fridays. This quarter, as part of our Community Awareness elective run by Winterhaven parents, we are organizing a donation drive. This drive is collecting donations for the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization (IRCO) who serves the holistic needs of immigrants, refugees, and mainstream community members. We as students believe that it is crucial for our community to help and provide support for immigrant and refugee families. We believe that everyone has the right and obligation to take part in their community and its actions, including kids. As 6, 7, and 8 graders, we are trying to take action and help families who may not be as lucky and well off as we are. So, if you have the time and ability to donate these necessities to families in need we ask you to do so and join us in our search for equality.  If you have any questions, please email our teachers and fellow Winterhaven parents Kristin Doherty or Beth Nelson at kristinwdoherty@yahoo.com and benelsonhill@gmail.com

Please leave donations in the front entry way of the school
