Dear Winterhaven Families:

I hope everyone has had a safe, restful and enjoyable summer vacation!

I want to take a moment to give you some information about the upcoming events that will help kick off the 2017-18 school year. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to give our office a call – 503-916-6200.

The PTSA Pool Party is Saturday, August 12th from 5:15 pm to 8 pm at the Creston Pool.

  1. Start-of-school-packets will be available for pick up beginning Friday, August 18th, from 9 am to 3:30 pm. We appreciate families picking them up prior to Winterhaven Registration Night on Thursday, August 24th, from 4pm to 6pm. By picking them up early, you can fill out all of the forms and return everything when you come to Registration Night. If you are unable to pick up your packet prior to this time, you can get the packets at Registration and fill everything out, leaving the information with us that same evening. If you’re unable to pick up your packet before the registration night and cannot attend the registration night, packets will be available for pickup in the main office until the first day of school. Packets not picked up by the first day of school will be delivered to students to take them home.
  2. Winterhaven Registration Night is Thursday, August 24th from 4pm to 6pm. This is a time for new families to meet other Winterhaven families, as well as an opportunity to sign up for carpooling and after school clubs. These signups take place in the gym. It is also when middle school students pick up their schedules and receive their locker assignments.  Kindergartners will have assessments prior to their first day of school and parents will be able to sign up for an assessment time during Registration Night.
  3. Back-to-School-Supplies. See the Suggested Basic Supplies list below. Our school wants all students in each class to have the same number and type of supplies. We ask every family for a voluntary $30 school donation per child to pay for supplies at the beginning of the year. This is to cover the cost of pencils, glue, markers, paper and other supplies we provide for the classrooms. Families can pay the $30 materials donation, which helps purchase classroom and school supplies by check during registration at Winterhaven Registration Night. This donation replaces the school supply list so that students and teachers have common materials and supplies to use in their classrooms. Checks should be made out to Winterhaven School.
New this year! – You can also pay the donation through School Pay by using this link: https://www.schoolpay.com/pay/for/School-Supplies-Donation---suggested/IdCtL
  4. Introduction to Winterhaven Meeting. During Winterhaven Registration night, I will be holding a short meeting in the auditorium for families who are new to Winterhaven School. This meeting will start at 5:00 pm and will give me an opportunity to provide some information to new families transitioning to Winterhaven School. Please plan to attend if your family is new to Winterhaven this year.
  5. Office Hours. The school office will be open starting on Thursday, August 17th from 9 am to 3:30 pm. Teachers return on August 25th
  6. First day of school for grades 1-8 is Wednesday, August 30th.
  7. First day of school for Kindergartners is Tuesday, September 5th.
  8. School Hours. For every student, the school day now begins at 8:45 am. For grades K-5, the school day ends at 3 pm. For students in grades 6-8, the school day now ends at 3:15 pm. For those families who need to have students in grades K-5 wait for middle school students before they leave campus, the library will be open with supervision until middle school students are dismissed.
  9. Building Status Update. The inside of our building has been cleaned and is awaiting the return of staff and students. Our grounds however, could use some work. Our Community Care Day is the morning of Saturday, August 26th, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. We hope you can come and help with a facelift to our grounds. Bring your own tools (especially power tools, such as trimmers and pruners) and gardening gloves to assist you with your choice of activity.
  10. Classroom assignments for 2017-18. For elementary students, here are the homeroom teachers for each grade:
  • Kindergarten: Mr.  Huckaba
  • 1st grade: Ms. Cooke
  • 2nd grade: Ms. O’Brien
  • 3rd grade: Mr. Levear
  • 4th grade: Ms. Sexton
  • 5th grade: Mr. Thompson
  • Middle school students: schedules are available at Orientation/Registration Night on August 24th.

Please enjoy the remainder of your summer! We hope you can make it on August 24th for our Winterhaven Registration Night and on August 26th for the school clean-up.

Mr. Sandilands, Principal

Suggested Basic Supplies

As we ask for a voluntary donation to help cover supplies, we do not have a school supply list for families

The items listed below are suggested:

  • Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade:  A backpack – all other supplies are provided by Winterhaven
  • 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade: A binder of your choice (accordion style, 3-ring, trapper keeper, etc.) with basic supplies to start the year (paper, pens and pencils of your choice).  All other necessary supplies are provided by Winterhaven (paper, compasses, scissors, protractors, pencils, glue) throughout the year; however, we realize that middle school students sometimes enjoy bringing their own materials.
